GS1 EANCOM Standard

What EANCOM is

GS1 EANCOM is a retail-oriented subset of EDIFACT designed for structured commercial communication. It is widely associated with retail, distribution and FMCG environments where products, parties and logistics units must be identified consistently across trading relationships.

EANCOM supports a logical sequence of business messages, covering master data, commercial transactions, planning information and transport-related communication within one coordinated framework.

Main message categories

  • Master data messages for party and product information
  • Commercial transaction messages for quotes, orders, confirmations and invoices
  • Reporting and planning messages for stock, sales and forecast data
  • Transport and logistics messages for dispatch, transport and receipt processes

Why businesses choose it

  • it uses GS1 identifiers such as GTIN and GLN
  • it reduces the need for complex partner-specific code cross-references
  • it fits naturally into wholesale and retail transaction cycles
  • it remains practical in international multi-partner environments

Implementation perspective

EANCOM is most valuable when companies want a coherent commercial process from catalogue and order through delivery and invoicing. Its real strength is not only message syntax, but the way it standardizes the broader business flow between suppliers, distributors and retailers.
